Our Cattle
Silver Spur core breeding philosophy for cattle emphasizes low-maintenance, thrifty, maternal cows that wean high-performance calves. These genetics must thrive on grass, gain efficiently in the feedlot and perform on the trail.
The Silver Spur cow herd at large must function in a number of diverse environments. The Desert Southwest in New Mexico, the high elevation and harsh winters of the High Dessert of North Park Colorado and the Encampment Valley of southern Wyoming as well as the highly productive Sand Hills of Nebraska are where this cow herd makes a living.
Silver Spur Ranch’s Charolais herd, established in the 1950s under Ol' Jim York, emphasizes fertility, soundness, and performance. The Herd ID number for Silver Spur Charolais is one of the first 10 to have been issued in the US by the AICA. Today’s herd traces back to the DeBruycker herd from Montana, as well as selected Canadian high percentage French Charolais herds. The focus is on producing deep, stout, sound Charolais bulls with moderate birth weights, feed efficiency and strong carcass value. These bulls go out on seed stock herd as well as the commercial cow herd.
At Silver Spur Kiowa, the goal for the Angus and Red Angus herds is to produce moderate-framed, forage-efficient, maternal, adequately muscled cattle with high-altitude adaptability. Disciplined selection, detailed analysis of genomic and performance data and strict culling have created a herd that excels in all areas. Silver Spur has one of the most consistent high-altitude selected Red Angus herds in the country. These Angus genetics, regardless of hide color, are practical, functional cattle that thrive in diverse environments and deliver consistent, reliable performance in the feedyard and on the rail.
The RangeFire is a Charolais and Red Angus cross originally developed by the Silver Spur Ranches, Encampment Division. The heterosis in this cross, from the F1 and F2 half-bloods to the high percentage Charolais debitives, allow Silver Spur to spread the performance of the Charolais further in our effort to produce exceptional fed cattle. We have found this hybrid vigor also allows us to select an elite set of composite females to further the RangeFire genetic line for the seedstock herd. This set of composite cattle has performance, feedyard, carcass and genomic data supporting it going back a decade or more.
